The University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma offers reading tutoring to area elementary students in the summer. The tutors are USAO elementary education and early childhood education majors who are enrolled in a senior-level course supervised by Dr. Linda McElroy, Professor of Education. The summer sessions end with a reception hosted by the USAO Student National Education Association.
Parents enroll children on a voluntary first-come, first-served basis. Children need to have completed kindergarten through seventh grade in order to be eligible. The summer reading program includes tutoring sessions on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for eight weeks in June and July. Tutors work one-on-one with the children. The tutoring sessions include reading and writing activities specifically designed for each individual child.
“Our goal is to provide each child with successful, enjoyable experiences that will support his or her literacy development. It is an outstanding experience for the college students as well, and we appreciate the interest and support of parents who make the commitment to bring children to campus for the tutoring sessions," said Dr. McElroy.
There is no charge for the program, but success of the program depends upon consistent attendance by the child. Each March, parents who are interested in having children participate for the summer can contact Dr. McElroy or the USAO teacher education office for application information.
