USAO Receives 'A' from ACTA
The University of Science and Oklahoma recently earned an ‘A’ grade from the American Council of Trustees and Alumni in the ‘What Will They Learn?’ (WWTL) project, recognizing the strength of the university’s academic requirements.
The American Council of Trustees and Alumni has identified seven essential subject areas that together form the foundation of a strong liberal arts core curriculum: composition, literature, foreign language, U.S. government or history, economics, mathematics, and natural science. WWTL evaluates the general education requirements of more than 1,100 U.S. colleges and universities, assigning grades from “A+” to “F” based on how many of these core subjects each institution requires.
“The University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma stands out for its commitment to a rigorous and streamlined 44-credit core curriculum, ensuring that students learn and engage with the fundamental disciplines of the arts and sciences.” Quoted a council representative. “At a time when many universities set minimal expectations for general education, the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma serves as a model of intellectual rigor, offering students an education that is both meaningful and transformative.”
The University’s Interdisciplinary Studies core program is a rich curriculum that applies to all undergraduates regardless of their individual majors. The program exposes every student to the wide range of subjects that constitute the liberal arts. The curriculum incorporates six of the seven core WWTL subject areas, including two American Civilization courses and an economics requirement only at 3% of institutions nationwide, as well as coursework in fine arts, philosophy, religion, and world history.
