Four USAO Students Inducted into Theatre Honor Society

Four students have recently been inducted into Alpha Psi Omega, the National Honor Society for theatre. The society was founded in 1925 as the first national honorary theatre organization for students in higher education, and remains the largest honor society today.
Elliot Landrum, a sophomore communications major with a minor in theatre arts, Ollie Bowman a sophomore theatre arts major, Envy Perez, a theatre arts major with a minor in deaf education, and Raoul Sotry, a psychology major with minors in philosophy and religious studies, theatre arts, and visual arts, participated in an initiation ceremony on April 27th, joining current cast members of Sigma Xi, USAO’s chapter of the society. Unique to Alpha Psi Omega, initiation requires that pledges perform memorized monologues written by Shakespeare for an audience of current students and alumni members.
The Sigma Xi Cast also honored recent Summa Cum Laude Graduates Abbee Mann and Tylan Hamilton. Those inducted into Alpha Psi Omega become lifetime members who benefit from scholarships, mentorship, and the connected community of more than 600 chapters across the nation.
“It is exemplary of our interdisciplinary program that students who are not theatre majors are being honored alongside of those pursuing degrees in theatre,” said Katie Davis, Professor of Theatre and Alpha Psi Omega cast sponsor. “Students from across our state choose USAO because they can participate in college productions regardless of their major and gain the social and academic benefits of this creative, collaborative, hands-on learning. Among this year’s new members are excellent young scholars who are taking advantage of the liberal arts programs and interdisciplinary nature of our theatre program to craft degrees specific to their interests and goals.”
Once a student has maintained the GPA requirements and has participated in enough theatre work through a variety of production and leadership roles, they are eligible for selection. More information about Alpha Psi Omega can be found on their website, www.alphapsiomega.org.
