The University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma is set to transform its historic campus into an immersive public history experience as part of Chickasha’s Festival of Freedom and the nationwide America250 celebration.

The initiative, titled A Walk Through History, will blend large-scale Americana visuals and historical storytelling to honor the women, educators, reformers, and leaders who shaped both Oklahoma and the nation. The experience deeply intertwines American history with the institutional legacies of USAO, remembering its history as the Oklahoma College for Women and the Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts.

Spanning the university’s grounds, the project will feature oversized historical banners highlighting influential women in American and institutional history. Featured figures will include Jane Addams, Frances Willard, Alice Robertson, Susan B. Anthony, and legendary Chickasaw storyteller Te Ata. Each banner will pair historical context and quotes with educational narratives, inviting visitors to engage with the campus in a new way.

“As Oklahoma’s only public liberal arts university, USAO has a unique opportunity to connect education, history, storytelling, and community in a way that feels deeply authentic to this campus,” said USAO President Dr. Kayla Hale.

“This project is about more than celebrating America’s history. It is about inviting people to experience the stories, values, and individuals that helped shape our institution, our state, and our country.”

The initiative stands as a major anchor for local celebrations, drawing visitors from across the state to explore Chickasha's cultural footprint.

“We really appreciate this type of community support from USAO during our Festival of Freedom,” said Jim Cowan, President of the Chickasha Chamber of Commerce. “Their campus is such an important part of Chickasha’s identity.”

Planning and design development for “A Walk Through History” are currently underway, with more elements scheduled to debut in conjunction with upcoming community celebration events.
