USAO Hits Enrollment High

USAO, Breaking Records. Building Oklahoma

The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma has opened its fall 2026 term with 1,100 students, its highest total headcount since 2008.

“This growth reflects the enduring value of USAO’s mission to provide a rigorous and accessible, education,” said USAO President Kayla Hale. “We are preparing students not simply for their first job, but for a lifetime of meaningful work, informed citizenship, and leadership.”

The milestone is fueled by a preliminary enrollment number of incoming first-year students, reaching heights the university has not seen in almost two decades.

The surge reflects growing demand for Oklahoma’s only public liberal arts institution, known for its interdisciplinary curriculum, small class sizes, and undergraduate mentorship. USAO also welcomed 172 first-generation students this semester.

“As someone who grew up close to the arts, USAO was an easy choice to make,” said Haden Scarberry, a first-year communications major, “The class sizes make learning feel authentic and engaging, and finding a campus community like this is honestly so rare to find in Oklahoma.”

Another first-year student, Sevyn Ashe, doted on the university’s Speech Language Pathology program. “I’m very interested in early childhood development and helping children learn and grow as their brains develop,” quoted Sevyn. “USAO’s environment is a good place to do that.”

Sheppard McConnell, Vice President of Enrollment Management, attributes the growth to the expansion of USAO’s academic programs, active statewide recruitment, and competitive scholarship initiatives designed to keep liberal arts education affordable.

“Our students recognize that the education we offer them extends well past a single major,” said McConnell. “Our curriculum provides the best chance at success post-graduation by developing critical thinking, intellectual curiosity and the ability to evaluate complex ideas – essential skills for today’s world.”
